The short answer
If Arini isn't the right fit, you have four kinds of alternatives: another dental AI receptionist, the AI built into your phone platform, an answering service that mixes AI and people, or a human virtual receptionist. Which one fits depends on your practice-management system, and on what a caller should hear when a booking can't go through.
How we built this comparison
This is Orbit Online's site, and Orbit is one of the options. We describe Arini, Weave, Smith.ai and Ruby only by what their own websites say, checked on November 6, 2026, and we link to each source so you can check us.
We don't list prices, ours or anyone else's. Prices change often, and many companies in this category quote each practice.
Before you look past Arini
Arini is an AI receptionist built for dentists. Its site says it answers inbound calls, reactivates patients and handles online scheduling, and the way in is a demo (arini.ai). If it's working on your calls, you may not need this page.
If you're comparing options, check these four things first. They matter more than how the voice sounds:
- Your practice-management system, and how bookings get into it
- Whether you want a person on some calls, not only an AI
- What the caller hears when a booking fails
- Whether each of your offices needs its own rules
Four options, side by side
| Option | Who answers, and what its own site says |
|---|---|
| Orbit Online (us) | AI, built for dental practices. Books directly into Dentrix Ascend, Open Dental and Denticon. HIPAA compliant and SOC 2 compliant; a BAA is available. |
| Weave AI Receptionist | AI inside Weave's phone platform, handing calls to your staff. Books for qualified dental practice-management systems. Designed to meet HIPAA standards; Weave publishes a BAA. |
| Smith.ai | AI receptionists and live agents. Not HIPAA compliant, per its FAQ. Dental calls only when no protected health information is involved. |
| Ruby | People supported by AI tools, for small businesses including dentists. HIPAA service with a BAA. Books through a HIPAA-compliant scheduling tool its receptionists can reach without a login. |
The options
1. Orbit Online (that's us)
- What it is: An AI receptionist built for dental practices. You don't configure anything. We build it, launch it, and manage it for you.
- Where bookings go: We integrate directly with three practice-management systems: Dentrix Ascend, Open Dental and Denticon. That's direct access as an approved developer, not a third-party connector. On a different system? If we don't integrate with it properly, we'll tell you before you buy.
- On the call: It offers only the times your own rules allow, by provider, appointment type, chair and location. It doesn't speak a confirmation your schedule didn't accept. If the schedule refuses a booking, the caller hears that a person will call back.
- What it won't do: No clinical answers, no treatment quotes, no invented appointments. In an emergency, it advises calling 911. It tells any caller who asks that it's an AI.
- Compliance: HIPAA compliant and SOC 2 compliant. A business associate agreement is available.
One office, one month: In September 2026, at a one-office practice we work with, our AI answered 146 calls and put 23 appointments on the schedule. Nearly half of those calls came in while the office was closed. Source: our own call and booking records.
Best for: practices on Dentrix Ascend, Open Dental or Denticon that want calls finished in the schedule, not turned into messages for tomorrow.
Look elsewhere if: you want a person's voice on every call, or prices you can read before you talk to anyone. We quote each practice on a call.
Getting started: Most practices are live on their phones within 7 days. Booking connects once your practice-management system is linked. You forward the calls you want covered: overflow, after hours, or all of them.
2. Weave AI Receptionist
Weave is a phone and patient-communication platform for healthcare practices. Its AI Receptionist answers calls and texts, books appointments, and hands calls that need a person to your staff. Weave's plans page lists it as early access, and its AI Receptionist page says booking is for qualified dental practice-management systems (AI Receptionist, plans).
Best for: practices already on Weave phones that want the AI inside the system their team uses every day.
Ask in the demo: does your practice-management system qualify for booking, and which features are still marked coming soon?
3. Smith.ai
Smith.ai sells AI receptionists and live agents. Its FAQ is direct about healthcare: "Smith.ai is not HIPAA-compliant." It says it works with dental practices only on calls that don't involve protected health information (Smith.ai FAQ).
Best for: general questions and messages that stay clear of patient details.
Ask in the demo: which of your calls it can take, and where the rest should go.
4. Ruby
Ruby is a virtual receptionist service. A live receptionist answers, with AI tools in support; in Ruby's words, "the person still leads the conversation" (Ruby AI). Its HIPAA service includes a business associate agreement at no extra charge. Under that service, messages stay in the Ruby app instead of email or text, and receptionists book through a HIPAA-compliant scheduling tool they can reach without a login (Ruby HIPAA).
Best for: practices that want a person's voice on calls and have a scheduling tool Ruby's receptionists can use.
Ask in the demo: how they would book into your schedule, and where your team sees messages.
Other dental AI receptionists include Viva AI and Peerlogic, and Weave bought TrueLark, an AI front-desk company, in 2025 (press release). The six calls below work on any of them.
Six calls to make before you switch
Every option sounds good on a demo line. Test them on your own phones. These six calls take about an hour.
- Call after hours and ask for a time you know is taken. A good receptionist offers you real open times. A weak one agrees to the time you asked for.
- Book an open time, then open your own schedule. Not the vendor's dashboard: your schedule. Check the provider, the appointment type and the length.
- Make it fail on purpose. Ask for something your rules don't allow. It should never confirm a visit your schedule didn't take.
- Ask, "Am I talking to a real person?" An honest AI says it's an AI.
- Describe a dental emergency, like swelling that keeps getting worse. It shouldn't give clinical advice. Check how fast your team hears about it.
- Call at your busiest hour and let it ring out. If the call never reaches the receptionist, the problem is in your phone forwarding, and it's better to find it now.
Then ask two questions in writing. Which practice-management systems does it write to directly, and which through a connector? Will it sign a business associate agreement before the first live call?
What Orbit does on those calls
- Calls 1 and 2: it offers only the times your own rules allow, and books into Dentrix Ascend, Open Dental or Denticon directly.
- Call 3: it doesn't speak a confirmation your schedule didn't accept. The caller hears that a person will call back.
- Call 4: it tells any caller who asks that it's an AI.
- Call 5: no clinical answers. In an emergency, it advises calling 911.
- Call 6 tests your phone system, not the receptionist. Run it on whichever option you pick.
When staying with Arini makes sense
If Arini already books cleanly into your schedule and your team trusts it, switching costs you a few weeks for little gain. Run the six calls on it first. If it passes, keep it.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best Arini alternative for a dental practice?
It depends on your practice-management system and on what should happen when a call can't be booked. If you run Dentrix Ascend, Open Dental or Denticon and want calls finished in your schedule, Orbit Online is built for that. If you want a person on some calls, look at a human answering service with a HIPAA option.
Which practice-management systems does Orbit Online integrate with?
Three, directly: Dentrix Ascend, Open Dental and Denticon. That's direct access as an approved developer, not a third-party connector. If you're on another system, we'll tell you before you buy whether we can integrate with it properly.
Is Orbit Online HIPAA compliant?
Yes. Orbit Online is HIPAA compliant and SOC 2 compliant, and a business associate agreement is available.
Can I keep my phone system and my number?
Yes. Orbit isn't a phone system. You forward the calls you want covered: overflow, after hours, or all of them.
How long does switching take?
Most practices are live on their phones within 7 days. Booking connects once your practice-management system is linked. You don't configure anything. We build it, launch it, and manage it for you.
